The history of Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen (a great outdoor and orienteering enthusiast) to solve the problem of the imprecision and instability of the needle in traditional compasses. The first product he launched on the market was a compass, model number M-311, and back in the 1950s, after developing stable and accurate marine compasses, the company went on to work for submarines and distributed compasses in more than 50 countries, including Canada and the United States. In 1952 Suunto produced lanterns for the Helsinki Olympic Games. A year later, the first marine compass (Suunto K-12) was launched on the market. And in 1957 they started to produce hypsometers which measure the height of trees.
In the 1960s the compass line grew and Suunto launched their first diving compass. In the years that followed, Suunto combined their experience in precision mechanics with the available knowledge in the field of electronics. The fruit of this union came in 1987 when Suunto started production of the diving computer the Suunto SME.
In the mid-nineties, Suunto developed the Suunto Spyder, the first diving computer which turned out to be the first step towards wrist computers. Thanks to this innovation the Suunto Vector was designed, the first wrist computer for outdoor activities which measures atmospheric pressure and altitude, helps to forecast the weather and shows both direction and the time. In 2009 the Suunto D9 came on the market, the first unit which combined a diving computer with a digital compass, and in the same year the Suunto T6 was also launched, a heart rate monitor which provides information about training and the resulting effects. Following this first training product, Suunto launched into the fitness market.
In 2007 they introduced a new line of Outdoor instruments with the Suunto Core and Suunto Lumi, which both won international design prizes. Two year later, in 2009, Suunto launched their line of watches Elementum, ideal for anyone who values style and functionality. And classic models like Quest should not be forgotten, nor the latest models such as the Suunto Ambit2 and the Ambit2 S which were launched in 2013 and which were based on the outdoor watch with GPS, the Suunto Ambit, which had come onto the market the previous year.
